You’ll Never Feel “Ready” for the CrossFit Open

NEW BLOG 2 1

That’s the Point

Whether this is your first, fifth, or fifteenth CrossFit Open. It happens every year.

The weeks leading into the Open, training feels decent… but not perfect. Your engine isn’t quite where you want it. Your barbell feels heavy at weights that should feel easy. Your gymnastics are inconsistent. Something always feels exposed.

And the thought creeps in: “I just don’t feel ready.”

You will never feel fully prepared for the Open.

The Open is designed to expose you.

That’s not a flaw in your training. That’s the test.

The beauty of the CrossFit Open is that it forces you into uncertainty. Unknown combinations. Movements you hoped wouldn’t show up (the OGs know the thing you hope doesn’t show up shows up in spades). Rep schemes that don’t match your strengths. It’s not a confirmation of your fitness. It’s a confrontation with your gaps.

But readiness isn’t a feeling.

It’s a decision.

You don’t wait until you feel confident to step onto the floor. You show up, execute what you can, manage what you can’t, and learn what you need to improve next.

As a coach, I’ve seen athletes PR workouts on days they felt flat. I’ve watched competitors doubt their engine and then outpace their expectations. I’ve also seen athletes who “felt amazing” get humbled quickly.

Feelings lie. Preparation shows up in behavior.

Did you train consistently?
Did you address weaknesses?
Did you practice pacing and strategy?
Did you recover well?

Are you receptive to coaching?

Are you endlessly chasing improvement in nuance and the mundane?

That’s readiness.

The Open isn’t about feeling prepared. It’s about revealing who you are under pressure.

And that’s a gift.

Because every year it gives you data. It shows you where your strength base needs to grow. Where your gymnastics break down under fatigue. Where your engine needs more capacity. It gives you direction.

So if you don’t feel ready?

Good.

You’re not supposed to.

Sign up. Show up. Compete hard. Learn. Then build again.
