You Run a Half Marathon One Step At A Time

BLOG COVERS 20

When you look at goals in a bigger picture, it can feel really overwhelming or intimidating.

Let’s take a half marathon.

13.1 miles feels long and intimidating if we have never even run a 5k before right?

But what if we broke it down into smaller steps?

1 mile at a time, even 400m at a time, or one foot in front of the other and you repeat that until we reach our distance.

Breaking down the bigger goal into smaller steps makes the goal feel more attainable, creates a distance that we feel more comfortable with pacing and feels more manageable to complete.

This applies to more than just a half marathon though.

We all have big goals and dreams we want to accomplish and most of the time those big goals or dreams feel intimidating because they require you to get out of your comfort zone and push yourself beyond limits you had set.

We can apply breaking it down into smaller steps to almost any facet of our lives.

Whether it be our fitness goals, professional career, personal relationships, or a new hobby.

Think about it.

If you played a sport as a young kid, did you become really good at that sport overnight?

No, you spent hours practicing working on skills and drills that helped improve your position you played on the team and your overall fitness level.

You would have games that you absolutely crushed and games that simply crushed you.

All that accumulated to you becoming great at that sport.

So, let’s take it back to the half marathon.

You may not feel like that is a doable distance for you right now, but does a mile feel doable?

Start there.

And slowly add distance each week as you condition your body to running and each week take it a little further outside your comfort zone.

Small steps and small increases in distance will add up to you running that half marathon and accomplishing a goal you thought was impossible at first.

Moral of the story here is that small steps create big change and you are capable of far more than you think you are if you break down your big goals into attainable milestones.
