It’s Nice Out…Now What?

It’s Nice Out… Now What?

Now that the weather is finally turning, the opportunities are endless. It’s that time of year where getting outside starts sounding a whole lot better than another hour under fluorescent lights.

Which means it’s probably time to start thinking about what your fitness actually looks like outside of the gym—and reminding ourselves why we train for the unknown and unknowable.

For the last few months, most of your training has likely lived inside four walls. Cardio machines have replaced running. Hiking, climbing, exploring—all of that probably took a backseat to cold, miserable weather.

And that’s not a bad thing.

But it does bring up a bigger question:

Am I actually ready for all the outdoor stuff?

A lot of people spend hours in the gym building aerobic capacity, dialing in gymnastics, getting stronger, maybe even putting some time into improving mobility.

But in that pursuit, we rarely stop and ask:

What do I actually need to stay safe, strong, and capable when I step into the real world?

It’s easy to get caught chasing numbers—your back squat, your muscle-ups, your “Helen” time. Those things matter. They give us benchmarks. They show progress.

But they don’t always translate as cleanly as we think to the activities that actually make up the rest of our lives.

If your fitness only exists inside the gym, you’re missing the bigger picture.

Fitness isn’t just about how much you lift, how fast you move, or how much work you can do within a controlled environment. That’s exactly why we train with constantly varied, functional movements at relatively high intensity.

We’re trying to build strength, range, and capacity across as many variables as possible—so that it actually carries over.

But just like a benchmark workout, you don’t really know if it’s working… until you test it.

Real fitness shows up when you jump into a pickup game, go on that hike you’ve been putting off, throw a kayak on your shoulders, or take on whatever challenge your life throws at you—without hesitation.

That strength you’ve been building?

It looks like moving confidently over uneven terrain or picking something up and carrying it without a second thought.

That conditioning?

It shows up when the pace gets uncomfortable—and you’re the one who can keep going.

That mobility?

It matters when you need to climb, crawl, reach, or move in ways that aren’t perfectly controlled.

I saw this firsthand recently with a client who loves skiing. For a couple of years, he couldn’t hit the slopes without pain. After committing to building strength and mobility, he went on a family trip and skied all day—pain-free.

That’s the win.

There’s nothing better than being able to do the things you love, confidently and without limitation.

So here’s the question:

Are you training to be the fittest person in your gym… or to actually live your life without compromise?

Because if your training isn’t helping you do the things you love, what are you really doing it for?

This week, do one thing:

Think about the one activity you’ve always wanted to do—but didn’t trust your body to handle.

Write it down.

Then go do something outside.

Go for a hike. Play a pickup game. Ride a bike with your family.

Use what you’ve built.

See what’s actually there.

Because the goal isn’t just to be fit—it’s to use your fitness to live a bigger life.

At the end of the day, your training should support your lifestyle. Not just help you win workouts or top a leaderboard.

And the best part?

When you start using your fitness this way, your training becomes more meaningful, more impactful—and a whole lot more powerful.

If you (or someone you know) is tired of sitting on the sidelines and ready to actually use their fitness, that’s exactly what we help people do.

If you’re ready to train in a way that carries over to real life, reach out—and let’s talk.
