Think about what you wanted when you stepped into a gym for the first time. You likely didn’t have aspirations of standing on top of a podium, right? Maybe you didn’t even know it could be a sport. You likely wanted to feel more confident, look better in your clothes (or without them), and become stronger to tackle anything life threw your way.
BUT there is another layer to CrossFit that has been highlighted through this summer season. Our coaches and members have competed at CrossFit competitions, at an Ironman, in Hyrox, and there’s even more around the corner! We hope that this inspires you to look at yourself as a competitive athlete, too. Because testing yourself in a sport-like environment can spark a whole new sense of purpose and community. Let’s dive into some of the options!
CrossFit Competitions – A Global Stage for Everyday Athletes
Each year, the season starts with the CrossFit Open. This event invites athletes of all levels to register and compete alongside individuals from across the globe. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or you scale every workout, the Open is a chance to see where you stack up, celebrate progress, and feel like part of something bigger.
Even if you’re not chasing elite status, there’s something powerful about circling a date on the calendar, training for it, and giving it your all. And now, the culmination of the season, the CrossFit Games, are kicking off next weekend!! Tune in to see what tests are in store and how your favorite athletes stack up.
Local Throwdowns & Intramural Fun
Maybe training for something on such a large scale isn’t your thing. That’s okay! You don’t have to travel or train like a pro to get that same excitement. At CrossFit Achieve, our In-House Throwdown is right around the corner! Mark your calendars for October 11th and make sure to sign up to be randomly assigned a partner and have fun testing yourself against the people you train with everyday. These events remind us that fitness can be playful, social, and motivating in ways that go beyond aesthetics or numbers on a scale. If you are looking for other small, local comps – talk to a coach or join this FB group!
The Rise of Hybrid Competitions like Hyrox
There is a local Hyrox event at CrossFit Wildwood that some of our members and coaches have already signed up for! You may have noticed that these events are popping up everywhere, combining endurance and functional fitness in a race format. Running, sled pushes, burpees, carries—all staples in CrossFit—become a way to test your engine in a new and exciting way. Just ask coach Rachel and Amanda 😉
Why Compete at All?
You don’t need to treat CrossFit like a sport to reap its benefits. But signing up for a competition, even just one time for fun can:
✅ Give you a clear benchmark for progress.
✅ Help you discover strengths you didn’t know you had.
✅ Bring you closer to the gym community.
✅ Remind you that fitness can be fun, not just functional.
CrossFit as a sport isn’t about perfection; it’s about participation. Whether you’re drawn to the big stage of the Open, the challenge of Hyrox, or the camaraderie of an intramural event, these experiences can add depth to your training and keep you coming back for more. Who knows—you might fall in love with fitness all over again.
